Tātai Whetū Waitaha provides opportunities for young sportspeople who face barriers that restrict or prevent them from achieving their potential.

We support our rangatahi to achieve goals without social restraint.

The Tātai Whetū Waitaha Programme is a non-profit programme dedicated to empowering young sportspeople with barriers by providing education, mentorship, coaching, community engagement and leadership opportunities.

We are committed to promoting equality, diversity and community within Waitaha.

The Trustees are community leaders involved in education, sport and business with a passion for helping, mentoring and supporting the youth of Waitaha Canterbury. They have a particular focus on rangatahi Māori and young Pacific peoples and underprivileged youth.

We inspire the next generation.

The Tātai Whetū Waitaha programme enables youth in Waitaha, Canterbury, to develop their potential and to become better people, utilising sport as the context.

This name, blessed by Ngāi Tūāhuriri, represents, represents our whakapapa/lineage, a direct line of descent from our tupuna/ancestors - ‘the stars in the sky above Waitaha/Canterbury’ - through the mountains to the plains, to us. We have a right to be inspired, raise our vision to our tupuna - the stars in the night sky - and follow in their footsteps.

Through their haerenga (journey) as a participant in Tātai Whetū Waitaha, each person’s potential will be realised:

  • developing personal and mental skills to be a better person,

  • creating positive influences amongst their peers, whānau, school and sporting communities,

  • becoming a role-model in their community, and

  • identifying their sport, education and career pathways.

Our legacy approach ensures that together we are all developing our next generation community leaders.
